From time to time I visit ranches in the area to photograph cowboys doing what cowboys do best and that is to cowboy. On the day I visited this particular ranch it was about as dusty as a day could get. Here in the Sonoran Desert we don’t get a lot of rain to begin with but we were experiencing a drought that was into it’s fourth year. Once the dust was stirred up it seemed to hang in the air for the rest of the day. I could taste dirt for days afterward.
The cowboy in the painting was cutting Longhorn calves from the herd to be branded and inoculated. Later to be returned to their mothers a little less comfortable than before.
